Introduction
Pioneered under Mauryan and Satavahana patronage, Buddhist architecture transitioned from timber construction to monumental rock-cut and stone masonry traditions. Serving reliquary, congregational, and residential functions, it expressed its religious philosophy predominantly through three primary typologies: Stupas, Chaityas, and Viharas.
1. Stupa (Reliquary Mound)
Originating as simple earthen burial mounds, stupas evolved into sophisticated stone-faced commemorative structures enshrining sacred relics of the Buddha or senior disciples.

- Acoustics and Natural Illumination: The halls possess vaulted ceilings featuring stone or timber-ribbed arches imitating wooden prototypes. The facade incorporates a prominent horseshoe-shaped window (gavaksha or Chaitya arch) that channels daylight directly into the interior nave (e.g., Great Chaitya at Karle, Ajanta Cave 19 and Cave 26).
3. Vihara (Monastic Dwelling)
Viharas were developed to house the Buddhist Sangha, evolving from seasonal rainy-season retreats (vassavasa) into permanent educational institutions.
- Residential Design: Classical rock-cut viharas were organized around a quadrangular pillared central hall or courtyard, surrounded by small individual sleeping cells (kuti) fitted with stone beds, storage niches, and pillared verandahs.
- Institutional Evolution: They transitioned from simple monastic dwellings carved into rock faces (e.g., Bhaja, Kanheri, and Bedse) to elaborate multi-tiered structural universities with lecture halls, libraries, and auxiliary shrines, culminating in institutions like Nalanda Mahavihara and Vikramshila.
