Genetic Mechanisms of Precipitation
Based on the mechanism of air ascent and cloud formation, precipitation in India is categorized into three primary genetic types:
- Orographic Precipitation: This occurs when moisture-laden winds encounter mountain barriers and are forced to ascend, cool adiabatically, and condense. Additionally, temperate frontal depressions known as Western Disturbances travel from the Mediterranean Sea to bring critical winter rain to north-western India.
- Convectional Precipitation: Driven by intense ground heating during summer months, air warms, expands, and ascends rapidly, causing localized condensation and thunderstorm activity. These manifest as pre-monsoon showers, including 'Kalbaisakhi' (Nor'westers) in Bengal and Assam, and 'Mango Showers' in Kerala and coastal Karnataka.
Physical Forms of Precipitation
Precipitation in India also manifests in distinct physical states depending on ambient atmospheric temperatures:
- Liquid Rainfall: The most prevalent form across peninsular and extra-peninsular India, accounting for over 75% of total annual precipitation during the Southwest Monsoon.
- Snowfall: Solid precipitation occurring when temperatures fall below the freezing point. In India, it is primarily confined to high-altitude zones of the Greater and Middle Himalayas, acting as natural water towers that feed perennial rivers like the Indus, Ganga, and Brahmaputra.
- Hail: Ice pellets formed within intense convective cumulonimbus clouds due to violent vertical updrafts. Hailstorms occur intermittently over northern and central plains during late winter and pre-monsoon transitions, often inflicting severe damage on standing Rabi crops and horticulture.
