Tides are the periodic rise and fall of sea levels caused by the combined effects of the gravitational forces exerted by the Moon and the Sun, along with the rotation of the Earth. These predictable oceanic movements play an indispensable role in maintaining marine ecosystems, assisting coastal navigation, and providing clean renewable energy.
Mechanism of Tide Formation
Tide generation is primarily governed by the differential gravitational pull and the centrifugal counterforce generated by the Earth-Moon orbital system:
- Gravitational Bulge (Near Side): The Moon exerts a strong gravitational pull on the side of the Earth facing it. Because gravitational attraction is inversely proportional to distance, ocean water is pulled outward toward the Moon, forming a primary high-tide bulge. The Sun's gravity exerts a complementary pull; when the Sun, Moon, and Earth align during full and new moons (syzygy), their forces combine to produce high-amplitude Spring Tides. When the Sun and Moon are at right angles relative to Earth (quadrature), lower-amplitude Neap Tides occur.
- Centrifugal Bulge (Antipodal Side): The Earth and Moon revolve around a common center of mass, known as the barycenter, located approximately 1,700 km beneath the Earth's surface. The revolution creates an outward centrifugal force that exceeds the Moon's weaker gravitational pull on the opposite (antipodal) side of the Earth, producing a secondary tidal bulge of equal magnitude.
Importance of Tides
- Navigational Aid: High tides (flood currents) raise coastal and estuarine water levels, allowing heavy draft vessels to enter shallow riverine and tidal ports such as the Kolkata Port on the Hooghly River and Deendayal Port in Kandla.
- Clean and Predictable Renewable Energy: Unlike solar and wind power, tides are entirely predictable. According to the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE), India possesses an estimated 12,455 MW of tidal energy potential, concentrated in estuaries like the Gulf of Kutch and Gulf of Khambhat.
- Estuarine Desilting and Flushing: The recurring cycle of ebb (receding) and flood (rising) tides flushes out municipal and industrial pollutants from coastal zones, clears sediment and silt accumulation at river mouths, and maintains open channels.
- Ecology and Nutrient Cycling: Tidal movements circulate critical marine nutrients, sustain intertidal mangrove ecosystems like the Sundarbans, and establish fertile nursery grounds for commercially valuable coastal fisheries.
