The first Pugwash Conference on Science and World Affairs was held in July 1957 in the village of Pugwash located in Nova Scotia, Canada. This meeting was inspired by the Russell Einstein Manifesto of 1955 which called upon scientists to assess the dangers of nuclear weapons. The conference took its name from the location where it was hosted by the industrialist Cyrus Eaton at his birthplace.
