Explanation
The Human Poverty Index was introduced in the 1997 Human Development Report published by the United Nations Development Programme. It was designed to measure deprivation in the same three basic dimensions as the Human Development Index: longevity, knowledge, and a decent standard of living. This index shifted the focus from simple income poverty to a broader perspective of poverty as a denial of choices and opportunities. It remained in use until 2010 when it was replaced by the Multidimensional Poverty Index.
