The Stepwise Process of Seed Certification

A distinct Seed Lot Number is assigned for provenance tracking (e.g., APR-24-08-01-01, encoding Month/Year of harvest, State code, Processing plant code, and individual lot sequence).
- 4. Seed Sampling and Laboratory Testing: The certification agency draws representative samples from each processed lot for laboratory evaluation. Standard tests determine moisture percentage, physical purity, weed seed counts, and germination capacity. Varietal genuineness and genetic purity are definitively validated through the Grow-Out Test (GOT).
- 5. Tagging, Sealing, and Issuance of Certificate: Lots conforming to the IMSCS are tagged and sealed. Specific color-coded tags are affixed: White tags for Foundation Seed and Azure Blue tags for Certified Seed. The standard certificate validity period is 9 months, extendable subject to re-testing.

To eliminate substandard and spurious seeds from the distribution chain, the regulatory framework has adopted the SATHI Portal (Seed Traceability, Authentication and Holistic Inventory).
