Explanation

The Portuguese were the first Europeans to establish a base at Hooghly in the late 16th century. Over time, they turned it into a fortified settlement and began using it as a center for piracy and the slave trade in the Bay of Bengal. Their activities, including the abduction and forced conversion of locals, eventually led the Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan to order his governor, Qasim Khan, to attack and expel them from Hooghly in 1632.
