Explanation
Brahmagupta was a celebrated 7th century Indian mathematician and astronomer. In his famous work Brahmasphuta Siddhanta, he stated that bodies fall towards the earth because it is in the nature of the earth to attract bodies, just as it is in the nature of water to flow. He described this force of attraction as Gurutvakarshanam, which is the Sanskrit term for gravitation. This observation significantly predated Isaac Newtons formal laws of universal gravitation. While Aryabhata and Varahamihira also made great contributions to ancient Indian science, it was specifically Brahmagupta who articulated the principle of all things gravitating toward the earth.
