Explanation

Harihara I, along with his brother Bukka Raya I, founded the Vijayanagara Empire in 1336 AD. They established their capital on the southern bank of the Tungabhadra River, which is a major tributary of the Krishna River, in what is present-day Hampi. The rulers of Vijayanagara, particularly the early ones, considered themselves as the agents or representatives of Lord Virupaksha (a form of Shiva), the presiding deity of the Virupaksha Temple at Hampi. They believed that all the land south of the Krishna River belonged to this deity, and they were ruling on his behalf, providing a strong religious legitimacy to their empire.
