Explanation

For a significant period, there has been a proposal and a long-standing debate to translocate a population of Asiatic lions from their sole existing natural habitat in the Gir Forest National Park and Wildlife Sanctuary in Gujarat to a second suitable habitat. This initiative aims to establish a geographically separate, free-ranging population to minimize the risk of extinction due to disease outbreaks or natural calamities affecting the single Gir population. Among the proposed sites, the **Kuno Palpur Wildlife Sanctuary** (now Kuno National Park) in Madhya Pradesh was identified and extensively prepared as the most suitable second home for Asiatic lions. The Supreme Court of India also directed the translocation in 2013. While Kuno National Park later gained prominence for the reintroduction of cheetahs, the proposal for lion translocation to Kuno predates and was a significant conservation topic.
